Thomas figured he’d be pushing the limits if he stayed for breakfast and so he took off through the window when the sun was hardly over the horizon.

I admired the view from my open window as he stood there in the side yard, bare chested and wrestling with his shirt. “You’re really going mountain biking now?”

“Yeah. Come with me. I know a shop where we can rent you a bike.”

From the way Thomas described his technique it sounded like an extreme sport. He pushed hard to get up the slope and then charged down at full speed without stopping for anything. Once he took a tumble severe enough to require six stitches to repair a gash in his leg. Nothing about that sounded like fun to me.

“Sadly, I’m not a mountain biking kind of girl. I’d only slow you down.”

Thomas leaned over the windowsill. “I’d wait for you.”

I met his kiss. My heart performed a somersault. “Your Aunt Saylor invited me to lunch today, remember? Plus I’ve got to go grocery shopping.”

“All right. You want to go to dinner later before the race?”

The race.

I still wasn’t clear on what was happening tonight. Thomas had been rather light on the description but he made it sound like a game, just something he did now and then for fun, like Viktor and his poker nights. I had no reason to feel uneasy. Thomas wouldn’t do anything shady.

“I have a better idea. How about you come over at about six and I will have a home cooked dinner ready.”

“You said you hate cooking.”

“Being in the kitchen with you yesterday led me to reconsider. I will find a fabulous recipe that even I can’t screw up and we can have dinner with Viktor before we go out.”

“Sounds great.”

I closed my eyes when he kissed me again. Then I opened them to discover Mr. Baca from next door had chosen this moment to water his wilting lantana with the garden hose. He gawked at us with no hint of subtlety.

Thomas held my face in his hands and brushed his lips over mine again. “I loved spending the night with you.”

“I love you too.”

Shit. Shit. Shit.

My mouth had acted before my brain computed. There’s a clear and obvious difference between ‘I loved spending the night with you’ and ‘I love you’. I realized that. I just realized it…belatedly.

“Uh.”

Mortification had set in. I was positive my face became tomato red in the span of three seconds.

And yet Thomas had not even flinched. He continued to hold me when I tried to withdraw and his eyes remained intent on my face.

“Gracie,” he whispered and touched his forehead to mine.

The spray from Mr. Baca’s hose hit the side of the house only two feet away. Either he’d been so distracted by the side yard soap opera that he didn’t realize where he was pointing that thing or else he was issuing a scolding over the fact that I had a man crawling out of my window at the crack of dawn.
